Public Interaction Forum - Post your feedback on ?Revival of Thane Creek for Inland Water Transportation?

With its rapidly growing population, economic development and the constraint of land mass available, the city of Mumbai suffers from roads congested with traffic. Apart from increasing number of casualties in the road accidents, the decongestion leads to delays in delivery of goods and people moving from one place to another and consequent economic issues. Keeping this in view and that Thane Creek is a very important water body in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has appointed i-maritime to prepare DPR on ?Optimum Utilization of Thane Creek? by exploring the possibility of diverting the on road traffic through the creek and using it as a route for inland water transportation. Thane Creek is part of the estuary of the Ulhas River in western India opening into Bombay Harbour. The creek opens into Bombay Harbour. Thane Creek (TC) lies between latitude (19.50N-190N) and longitude (72.50E-730E). The creek is narrow at the Northern end, where it is fed partially by river Ulhas. Along the east and west sides of the creek, many industrial units have come up. It has also been recognised as an Important Bird Area by the Bombay Natural History Society, as it is home to flamingoes and several other migratory and wading birds. i-maritime has done an extensive analysis of the cargo and the passenger traffic the creek is likely to attract given its hydrographical constraints and the proposed developments in the region and has come up with some solutions.
