 ·                The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled 36.69 million tonnes (mt) of traffic during 2008-09 as against 36.02 mt handled during the previous financial year, registering a growth of 1.86 per cent. ·                The Tuticorin port has achieved a record cargo handling of 220.11 lakh tonnes during the fiscal 2008-09 with an overall increase of 2.47 per cent over the previous year. ·                The Visakhapatnam port handled 63.94 million tonnes (mt) of cargo during 2008-09 against a target of 65 mt set by the Ministry. ·                In 2008-09, the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) handled 46.41 million tonnes (mt) of cargo traffic, up from 42.44 mt in 2007-08, thus posting 9.36 per cent growth. ·                Great Offshore has entered into a 3-year contract with ONGC to charter three of its vessels for $65 million. ·                The Mundra port handled around 2,200 vessels and approximately 38 million tonnes of cargo volumes across all segments during the financial year 2008-09 against 1,624 vessels and 28.79 million tonnes of cargo during 2007-08.  ·                Robust growth in finished fertiliser, thermal and coking coal; petroleum products and iron ore have helped the major ports register a 2.13 per cent growth in 2008-09 against 2007-08. The major ports handled 530.35 million tonnes (mt) of traffic in 2008-09 against 519.31 mt, according to an initial data of Indian Ports Association. The cargo handled is almost eight per cent lower than the cargo handling target set by the Government – of 576.09 mt – for the major ports.
