Jindal Infrastructure's Bichitrapur port project facing trouble - 2011-10-31


A captive deep-sea port recommended at Bichitrapur here by Jindal Infrastructure Limited, which is a JSW Group company, is witnessing tough time as concerns have been raised over its expected affect on the Subarnarekha river mouth. Another commercial port recommended by Creative Port Development Ltd at Kirtania, located within Bichitrapur, has is trouble due to the feasibility of building two ports in close proximity. Reports suggest that the water resources department has emphasised on a detailed study on the affect of developing two ports on the Subarnarekha river mouth. It has decided to got for a study. Moreover, the department had also asked for the views of forest and environment department on developing the recommended port at Bichitrapur. Furthermore, the forest and environment department has said that although the port site is not a mass nesting area for Olive Ridley turtles, but sporadic movements of turtles have been observed. The Bichitrapur port had not made any headway after JSW Infrastructure declared to establish a Rs 2,238-crore captive deep sea port. The company is planning to invest Rs 550 crore during the first phase which has been scheduled for commissioning by 2013. The cargo handling of the port has been estimated to touch 20-million tonnes per annum in the second phase.
