Kochi port ready to receive Arshiya's 2nd container train service - 2012-05-07

The Kochi Port is all set to receive the second container train service started by Arshiya Rail Infrastructure Ltd from North India for domestic movements. The train with 90 teus of white cement is expected to reach Ernakulam Wharf from Jodhpur by this weekend.

The port is facilitating the service by providing rail sidings, container handling equipments, storage area at its buffer yards for cargo. The train service will facilitate the movement of goods from north India at cheaper rates than by road transport.

It is also possible to move cargo from Kerala to north Indian markets at competitive rates through the rail services. The port had received the first train service on April 3.

A senior port official said that Shipping Corporation of India had recently started trial calls to ICTT Vallarpadam of their European services. If ideally planned, these two formats can be combined for seamless and cost effective movement of transhipment containers up north to European destinations, he said. Arshiya Rail Infrastructure Ltd, a subsidiary of Arshiya International Ltd, has become the first private container train operator (PCTO) to commence domestic container train operations from Kochi Port.
