Shipping Ministry plans framework for project review - 2012-07-30

The Shipping Ministry has planned a framework for reviewing the implementation of projects in various ports. The framework is aimed at expediting projects in various ports. A press release by New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said here that Mr G.K. Vasan, Union Shipping Minister, said this while reviewing the various projects of NMPT, Mormugao Port Trust and Kochi Port Trust at Mormugao on July 27.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vasan said that the Shipping Ministry has decided to have a proper framework for review of all the projects. Under this, the Joint Secretary (Ports) will review the projects once in a fortnight, and the Secretary (Shipping) will review once in a month. The Minister said he will review the projects once in a quarter so that any issue that can impede the progress of the projects could be sorted out at appropriate time. “This will ensure that there is no delay in getting the approvals and commencement of the work. In this connection, we kept the first review for three major ports in Goa,” he said. Mr Vasan said that the Shipping Ministry has taken upon itself a task of completing 42 projects amounting to Rs 15,000 crore.

The chairmen of the three major ports gave presentations on various aspects. Their presentations included projects related to capacity addition and their status; and capital and maintenance dredging plans. They also gave details on various efficiency parameters such as pre-berthing detention of vessels, turnaround time, idle time, and utilisation of equipment and financial parameters.
