NMPT hopes to handle 100 boxes of liquid glucose a month - 2013-03-20

New Mangalore Port expects to export 100 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of liquid glucose cargo every month. A press release by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said here on Tuesday Gujarat Ambuja Exports Ltd, which manufactures liquid glucose at its plant in Shiggaon taluk of Haveri district of Karnataka, has started exporting containerised cargo of liquid glucose in barrels through NMPT.

To begin with, the port handled 25 containers for shipment to Sudan in the vessel m.v. Tiger Mango recently. The release issued by D. Mahadevaiah, Traffic Manager in-charge, said the exporters are satisfied with the performance of the port and its infrastructure. They have indicated a monthly volume of 100 TEUs through NMPT, it said. The decision to move the export consignments through NMPT was taken after the recent visit of company representatives to the port.

Quoting P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release attributed the handling of this new cargo, hitherto moved through neighbouring ports, to the proactive marketing efforts initiated by the port at various locations of the hinterland during the last few years. The addition of infrastructure facilities in the recent past and the increase in frequency of container vessels have also helped attract new cargoes, he said. The port handled 45,265 TEUs of containers till March 19 of the current fiscal as against 43,278 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.
