NMPT handles largest parcel size of coal - 2013-04-12

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled the highest parcel size of coal cargo on Tuesday.

A press release by the NMPT said here that m.v. Emma Schulte, a gearless vessel, carrying 1,07,102 tonnes of coal called at New Mangalore Port on Tuesday. This is the highest parcel size of coal ever handled at the port, it said.

Gearless vessels are ships without cranes or conveyors. These ships depend on shore-based equipment at their ports of call for loading and discharging.

The release said that the entire consignment has been imported from South Africa for two users -- Bhatia Global (74,102 tonnes) and Minerva Steel and Power (P) Ltd (33,000 tonnes). The discharge operation is in full swing at the port, the release said.

During 2012-13, the port handled 6.91 million tonnes (mt) of coal against 4.02 mt handled in the previous fiscal.

Quoting P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release attributed the growth in coal handling to the infrastructure addition made at the port and to the efficient labour force.
