Kochi Port union seeks hiring ban end - 2013-06-12

The Joint Forum of Trade Unions in Kochi Port has requested the Government to lift the recruitment ban in the port sector. There is a sharp fall in the number of workers employed in the sector. In 10 years the number of workers employed by the Government-owned major ports dropped by 50 per cent. The total number of workers employed in all the 12 major ports in the country is just about 54,000.

In a memorandum submitted to the committee, the union leaders said that the recruitment ban has adversely affected promotions of workers because the entry-level posts have been lying vacant for a long time.

The number of workers employed at the Kochi Port is only 2,750, the union leaders told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport headed by Sitaram Yechury, which visited the port recently.
