Offshore Support Vessels - Existing Scenario

OSV market is predominantly occupied by two types of vessels. Supply vessels represent 86% of the global fleet and the rest is occupied by Construction vessels. Supply vessels, further, are categorized into AHTSV, AHT and PSV. AHTSV represent nearly 50% of this segment, PSV’s presence is 40% and the rest are AHTs.

To support Indian offshore activities, 144 OSVs are operating in Indian waters with 109 Indian-flagged vessels and 35 foreign-flagged vessels.

Nearly 50% of the total offshore fleet is owned by Great Offshore in India followed by Tag Sea Logistics and ONGC. The top owners of the foreign-flagged vessels operating in Indian waters are Tidewater Marine, Britoil Offshore, Eastern Navigation, Bourbon Offshore Posh Semco and SBS Marine.

Existing Offshore Support Vessels- East Coast

The existing offshore space on the east coast of India is dominated by ONGC and Reliance which are the main block owners, followed by Cairn Energy India Pvt. Ltd., Hercules Ltd., Hardy Oil and Gas plc and Hindustan Oil and Exploration Corporation (HOEC). Most of the offshore installations on the east coast comprise of drill ships, Jackup rigs and few platforms. ONGC is operating in KG basin with nine installations, Reliance is operating in Cauvery basin with three, Cairn Energy and Hardy are operating with one installation each in KG basin and Pondicherry waters respectively.

In total 15 rigs and 2 platforms on the east coast are being served by the Offshore Support Vessels. The split by types of Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) plying on the east coast are as below.


Typically, 2 OSVs cater to the requirement of a Rig or Platform. If the installations are close by i.e. within 50 miles then 3 vessels could serve 2 offshore installations. The following table captures the details for the offshore support vessels plying on the east coast.

ONGC has the largest fleet serving the offshore installations with 22 Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs), followed by Reliance with a fleet of 8 OSVs, Cairn Energy with a fleet of 6 OSVs, GSPCL and Hardy with a fleet of 2 OSVs each.

Most of the OSVs plying on the east coast of India are quite new breed of vessels with nearly 79% of them less than 5 years old. 11% of the OSVs are in the range of 16-20 years and 10% of them are in the range of 11-15 years.
